Wichita African Union partnered with Ms. Riley, a 4th grade teacher at Minneha Core Knowledge Magnet Elementary School, along with Godfred Kofi Hobenu (Fred), originally from Ghana and a Wichita State University computer science major Luke Nyapadi, to deliver a presentation on Mali Empire and the historic figure Mansa Musa who ruled the empire to 4th grade students on February 24, 2026. This presentation was in response to Ms. Riley's invitation for a presentation to complement her unit of study on African Kingdoms.
The presentation explored the history of the Mali Empire and its famed ruler, Mansa Musa, while also highlighting the culture and traditions of the kingdom during that time. Fred described the vast size of the empire and the natural resources -especially gold- that contributed to its extraordinary wealth. He also recounted Mansa Musa's historic journey from Mali to Saudi Arabia and back. In addition, Fred showcased Ghanaian traditional clothing made by hand and spoke about the traditions surrounding the dress, celebration and dance.
Following the presentation, students enjoyed an interactive session where they had a chance to identify African countries using flag images, as well as a Q&A session. One of the students originally from Zimbabwe was playfully nicknamed Mansa Musa. This student, along with another student and Ms. Riley came to welcome us at the school's office upon arrival, which demonstrated that the school had put in more effort planning for this event.
We enjoyed the visit and the school (head teacher, teachers & students) made this event special and meaningful for the students. The kids demonstrated great interest to learn and stayed engaged throughout. We felt honored for the opportunity to be at the school for this mission.
