WAU Participated in the 'Harambee on the Hill' Program at Saint Mark United Methodist Church, July 19, 2026, Honoring History, Heritage and Community Connections

WAU was invited by Saint Mark United Methodist Church to their Harambee on the Hill program, celebrating 116 years of ministry. Harambee is an African word meaning unity, pulling together, community uplifting. Twenty-two other community partners were at the event celebrating the spirit of shared responsibility, connection and community. Partner tables were set up all around the room displaying community resources, while guests sat in the center of the room. It was a vibrant event packed with music and messages of support for the community, unity, and celebration. The Senior Pastor of the church, Rev. Dr. Victor T. McCollough introduced the program and shared words of appreciation.

WAU was invited to bring an authentic African flavor to the program's theme, Harambee on the Hill. We performed twice, first with a grand entrance, dancing to an English version of Harambee song while waving African flags. The second performance was a story telling piece, Conflict in the Village and the Return of Peace' led by Dr. Daisy, ending with villagers singing the Swahili song 'Harambee Harambee Tuimbe Pamoja.'

WAU table gave away $5 coupons for vegetables and fruits at Healthy Corner Grocery Stores. The coupons were donated to us for distribution in the community by Wichita

State University Community Engagement office. We also shared map of Africa showing major cities - good for children, the flyer of our annual celebration on September 5, and left an offering for the church.
