Who We Are
Wichita African Union, Inc. (WAU), founded on January 28, 2012, is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization, EIN 45-4583328, based in Wichita, Kansas, USA, by the African Diaspora. WAU is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Our mission is to promote educational excellence through award of scholarships, outreach programs and collaboration with likeminded organizations involved in outreach and volunteerism.
WAU has become a pillar in the local community and a bridge connecting the cultures from the continent of Africa and Kansas.
WAU is involved in many community outreach initiatives, partnerships with local organizations and promoting education for the youth.
WAU passes down African values to the next generations, show cases the African continent’s rich cultures to foster cultural exchange, encourages hard work and promotes educational excellence for youth and young adults through mentorship and award of scholarships.
Every year WAU brings together the African diaspora and the Kansas community in one magnificent event to celebrate its Union.

Bringing Change
PROGRAMMING
WAU is currently concentrating on these three programs:
1. Scholarship Awards Program
This is an ongoing program that awards scholarships to college and university students studying at local colleges and universities in Wichita and the surrounding towns. This program helps WAU to achieve its mission goal of promoting educational excellence.
2. Mentorship & Youth Empowerment Program
WAU has a mentorship program at Washington Accelerated Learning Elementary School where African newcomer students are the primary beneficiaries because of the nature of their circumstances; the students and their families are adjusting to a new education system, a new culture, and language. WAU members being African immigrants themselves want to fill in gaps that are culturally appropriate, language translation, educational, emotional support, material resources, and encouragement to enhance their educational experience.
WAU also recognizes high school, college and university graduates through formal ceremonies where the graduates receive WAU Certificate of Accomplishment and a small gift provided by WAU members.
3. Community Outreach Program
WAU is committed to building a community that is connected and together taking steps to foster habits that lead to positive change for a better community today and tomorrow. WAU promotes forums that allow Africans in Wichita and surrounding communities to know one another, fellowship, and exchange ideas. WAU promotes the satisfaction of the needs and welfare of Africans by mobilizing resources to address issues that impact Africans at home and abroad. WAU provides an environment that helps African students adapt to the way of life in Wichita and United States as a whole while they pursue their educational objectives and goals.
WAU ANNUAL CELEBRATION
WAU hosts a celebration every year in the fall to bring together the African diaspora community, other community groups, local students and residents of the city of wichita and beyond to celebrate its union. The celebration usually features Fashion Show, dances, music, food, Safari Displays and Scholarship Awards.

EDUCATION IS KEY
Promoting education of the youth is at the top of WAU’s agenda. We want the youth to get the tools they need to succeed and to be leaders of tomorrow. As an organization, we want to support and encourage the youth as they go through their academic and professional development. We believe that any scholarship that we provide can help make a positive impact on graduation outcomes.
