On October 4th, 2024, The Vice President of International Development for The Outreach Program, Mr. Isaac McNary, joined WAU meeting to make a presentation on what his organization is doing in Singida region, Tanzania. The program is providing after school program, nutritious meals, books, uniforms, extracurricular programs such as sports with associated infrastructure, all for primary school students and a mobile clinic (providing vaccinations, childhood care services, hygiene education and personal hygiene supplies for girls) and clean water supply for students and their families, staff and the communities within the program's catchment area. The program is active in 60 villages, serving about 70,000 students in 96 schools.
He also talked about impact of the program which include significant reduction in water borne diseases because of the clean water, hygiene education and the medical attention from the mobile clinic, overall improved health for the school children from the nutritious meals and also increased classroom time for both boys and girls.
The program treats water by removing impurities and disease causing micro-organisms using a filtration system and ultraviolet radiation from solar, respectively. The capital investment for the water system costs about $4,000 but can last for up to 5 years and each serves up to1,000 students.
