Who We Are

Wichita African Union (WAU), founded on January 28, 2012, is a Non-Profit organization based in Wichita, Kansas, USA. The organization’s mission is to unite Africans in the diaspora, facilitate cultural exchange, promote educational excellence and collaboration with like-minded organizations involved in outreach and volunteerism.

WAU has become a pillar in the local community and a bridge connecting the cultures from the continent of Africa and Kansas.

WAU is involved in many community outreach initiatives, partnerships with local organizations and promoting education for the youth.

WAU passes down African values to the next generations, show cases the African continent’s rich cultures, encourages hard work and rewards youth with college and university scholarships.

Every year WAU brings together the African diaspora and the Kansas community in one magnificent event to celebrate the Union.

Empower. Support. Enrich.

Bringing Change

WAU would like to ask for your support in the form of monetary donation to help fund its outreach efforts which include scholarships for students attending local colleges and universities who meet WAU’s criteria for scholarship award and other volunteer efforts in the community and the city. In the past WAU has done the following:

  1. Donated food to the Lord’s Diner.

  2. Donated money to the local Food Bank.

  3. Donated food, clothing and bedding items to local refugees in collaboration with Norvus Orsa Ministries.

  4. In collaboration with the Ethiopian Community of Wichita, donated medical supplies and equipment to a community affected by war in Ethiopia.

  5. Donated money to a severely handicapped middle school student in Malawi.

  6. This year WAU participated in Juneteeth activities at Arkansas City as a sponsor and performed Ugandan traditional dance and drumming.

  7. Currently WAU is procuring classroom equipment in form of desks, tables and chairs for a classroom of kids with disabilities in Malawi.

WAU hosts a celebration every year in the fall to bring together the African diaspora community, other community groups, local students and residents of the city of wichita and beyond to celebrate its union. The celebration usually features Fashion Show, dances, music, food, Safari Displays and Scholarship Awards.

Promoting education of the youth is at the top of WAU’s agenda. We want the youth to get the tools they need to succeed and to be leaders of tomorrow. As an organization we want to support and encourage the youth as they go through their academic and professional development. We believe that any scholarship that we provide can help make a positive impact in their educational journey.
